Fourth Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party
A Benefit for the Mojave Desert Land Trust
August 13, 2010 at the Integratron, Landers, CA
The Mojave Desert Land Trust will host its fourth annual Perseid Meteor Shower viewing party at the Integratron on Friday, August 13th. The event runs from 8:00 p.m. until midnight, and overnight camping at the Integratron is available. The event benefits the Mojave Desert Land Trust, whose efforts to preserve desert wilderness include preserving our beautiful night skies.
The Perseids are considered by many to be the best meteor shower of the year, sometimes peaking at 50 per hour. Attendees can expect a great night for meteor-watching, but the star show will not be confined to the sky. The Southern California Desert Video Astronomers will donate their time and equipment to project spectacular live images from deep space onto the side of the Integratron building, using powerful telescopes and a state-of-the-art projection system.
Interpretive rangers from Joshua Tree National Park will give a presentation about the desert's famous night skies, Clive Wright will perform beautiful ambient live music, and participants can win fantastic prizes at the event’s raffle. Delectables from the dessert and coffee bar are also included.
The Integratron is an icon to the Space Age, and the perfect venue for meteor-watching. The structure was built in the 1950s by aerospace engineer George Van Tassel, who claimed that extraterrestrials provided him with the all-wood design. Its location is far removed from light pollution, so stars and meteors will shine brightly. In addition, participants will experience the Integratron’s signature experience – the Sound Bath – in the acoustically perfect sound chamber.
Tickets are $45 per person for Land Trust members, and $50 for non-members (includes a Land Trust membership). Kids 12 and under are free. Overnight camping is an additional $30 per person and includes a continental breakfast. Bring comfy chairs or blankets for star-gazing, water bottles (water is available for refills on site), and camping gear if you're planning to camp. THIS EVENT HAS SOLD OUT EVERY YEAR.
